About Shimane Safaris

Abraham Steinberg, fondly known as Simon to friends and clients, is the heart and soul of Shimane Safaris. Simon started out as a Houndsman in 1996 and obtained his Botswana PH license in 2003. While licensed for all dangerous game, Simon is best known for the quality of leopards he has successfully harvested for his many satisfied clients from all over the world. The quality of the  trophies are the best testament of what you can expect hunting with Shimane Safaris.

Over the years, Simon has devoted a lot of time, money and effort in the breeding and selection of hounds best suited for hunting different terrain and conditions in Botswana. Simon's expertise as a PH, in combination with excellent trackers and a seasoned pack of hounds have all contributed to the success enjoyed by Shimane Safaris.

This winning combination in Shimane Safaris is proven by photos in our photo gallery. We offer a full range of services at Shimane Safaris. If you have already booked a hunt with an outfitter, you can request the outfitter to hire Simon as either the Houndsman or PH, or both. Alternatively, you can contact us to customize a complete hunt that meets your expectations. Shimane Safaris is committed to making your hunting trip a lasting and memorable experience.

Axel, the male Plott Hound recently added to Shimane pack of hounds, is shown with Simon after a successful hunt. Axel worked well with the rest of the pack and passed his first test.  Well done, Axel!

As part of his commitment to improve the quality of his hunting hounds, Simon flew to Jacksonville Florida USA to purchase 3 good looking  Plott Hounds from a local breeder. Plott Hounds are best known for their aggressive nature towards the prey. Simon returned to Botswana with an adult male, a pregnant female and a 6 month old puppy. Over time, this addition will be tested in terms of their adaptability under the mostly dry hunting conditions of Botswana.

Every PH who hunts leopard knows the inevitability of getting mauled. It is not a matter of “IF” but rather “WHEN”.

Simon is no exception. On February 14 2024, Simon had the 3rd mauling by a leopard. It surely was not Simon’s idea on how to spend Valentine’s Day.

A wounded leopard will fight back as shown in the pictures below. With expert medical attention and 2 weeks of doctor’s mandated rest, Simon was back hunting after 2 weeks. Chalk it to another day in the life of a PH!

When not out chasing big cats, Simon finds time to enjoy his other favorite pastime. Even hard working guys need a break!
